Be Here Now: A Zen Bath Remodel in Berkeley

Bath as sanctuary: Remodelista Architect/Designer Directory member Jerome Buttrick just finished up this quietly luxurious remodel in Berkeley. Here’s his account (and if you have questions for Jerome, leave them in the comments section below):

“The former bath was nondescript and slightly dated, with Corian counters and an absence of tactile finishes. My mission was to create a Japanese-influenced bath; my clients had just returned from Japan when we started the project and appreciated the use of organic materials. I designed the live-edge cabinet with Paul Disco of Joinery Structures (Paul is the master craftsman who designed and built Larry Ellison’s Japanese house in Woodside). Bath geometry in our culture is generally too machined and perfect; we wanted to add a wabi-sabi element to the room. Reclaimed wood is like having a silent storyteller in your house.”

N.B. To see a recent kitchen remodel by Buttrick, go to The Architect Is In. Photography by Matthew Millman.

Above: “The Gregg Pendant Light from Fosacari is an alabaster-like soap bubble that seems to float out of the skylight,” Jerome says. “Its irregular form loosens up the room. The sink is a deck-mounted Aquagrande Wash Basin from Lacava and the mirror-mounted Vola In-Wall Mixer Faucet was designed by Arne Jacobsen.”

Above: Buttrick specced a Neo-Rest 600 tankless, automatic-flush, one-piece toilet from Toto.

Above: “What is it about daylight falling on a slowly sloped surface? Religion in a bathroom.”

Above: The shower is tiled in Avalon II matte white tile with a Thassos Mosaic white marble tiled floors, both from Ann Sacks. The Grande Rake vertical glass panel (“the glass catches flares of light all day,” Jerome says) is from Vancouver-based Joel Berman Glass Studios.
