Before and After Retreat Bedroom Makeover With Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Of The Year

This before and after.

You know when you have an idea for a room and it turns out even more amazing than you even hoped or dreamed for?

This is one of those rooms.

All inspired by the most amazing paint color.

And the most amazing day.

Because today? Today is the day to announce the Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color of the Year. It’s one of my favorite days of the year. I never miss a color of the year announcement or chance to make over a room.

Like this one.

And this one or this one from last year that went viral.

And the best part?

This year the room has a surprise. Something that takes it to the next level and will have you scrolling up and down to check out the room again and again.

Are you ready?

LET’S GO.

Let’s see where we started.

This is the before.

This is my daughter Whitney’s room before she left for college and took half of the room with her to decorate her new apartment.

(Total aside: that little bear on the bed? Don’t tell her I told you, but his name is Butterscotch and he’s now pursuing a higher education degree in Waco).

The desk is gone.

The hope chest at the end of the bed is gone.

The rug is gone.

Even that lamp is gone.

The room is almost empty now and all that’s left behind is sadness.

A lonely room without direction or style or any decor to call its own.

Good thing I’m here.

Good thing I discovered the most amazing paint color to inspire an entire room makeover that will have this entire space (and Butterscotch if he were here) doing cartwheels.

This color is all about shaking off the old and bringing in the new—a sense of new spaces and soul-deep satisfaction.

It’s about destinations worth moving toward.

It’s about finding beauty beyond ourselves and appreciating what we have.

It’s all about coming home.

This amazing color?

It’s the Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color of the Year.

Redend Point SW 9081. It’s a beautiful blush-beige color that can make any space feel calming and warm. 

And now?

Are you ready for a little before and after?

From this…..

To this.

I wanted to create a focal wall for the space. 

And nothing says focal wall like stripes. I paired Redend Point SW 9081 with Pure White SW 7005, which I painted on the other walls of the space. 

But why just paint the walls?

What about curtains?

I came up with this idea about painting the curtains on the walls the same colors and the same width of stripes so that when you closed the curtains, it would look like this.

CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE IT?

Seriously.

It’s a curtain optical illusion.

It’s like the window disappeared.

I’m going to show you exactly how we painted the curtains to match in another post because today we have a little more before and after to get to.

On this side of the room, I created a reading nook.

There’s the prettiest painting of flowers (which she loves) with pops of yellow and red and pink and blue.

I added a cozy pillow to the chair with tassels and texture.

On this side of the room, I added these beautiful wood artwork pieces.

There’s a cozy throw at the end of the bed.

The rug on the floor is designed to ground the space. Its layers of tufted khaki and cream and it has the prettiest overall pattern.

On the bed, I added layers of warmth and comfort.

There are quilted euro shams with pom pom fringe, gray patterned pillows, and this XO XO pillow on the bed.

There’s also a white comforter and this quilted blanket along with a pom pom throw to make the space feel extra cozy.

On this side of the room, I found the prettiest dresser at the thrift store.

We painted it Evergreen Fog SW 9130 (which was the 2022 Color of the Year).

I loved it so much and knew it would pair perfectly with Redend Point.

And those are the original handles spray-painted gold (post to come soon on this makeover, too).

On this side of the room, we took down the barn door that leads to the Jack and Jill bathroom and replaced it with curtains instead.

It’s such an easy fix when you have a closet with odd-sized doors that don’t really work with standard-sized doors.

I also added this wood bookcase on this wall to bring in the organic texture of wood to warm up the space.

But the real star of this show?

These painted curtains.

This was such a fun makeover.

I love spaces that feel like they were always meant to be.

I love paint colors that inspire me every day.

I love painted curtain projects that make me smile.

But most of all?

I love creating spaces….

….that feel like home.
