Best Professional Bath: Modern Farmhouse Master Bathroom by Megan Bachmann Interiors

The winner of the 2018 Remodelista Considered Design Awards Best Professional Bath is Megan Bachmann Interiors for her Modern Farmhouse Master Bathroom project in Campbell, California.

The project was chosen as a finalist by guest judge Stephen Alesch, who said: “The carpet is such a unique touch in this bathroom—as well as the shiplap around the tub. It’s breaking rules, but in an elegant, wise, and peaceful way.”

Remodelista: What does your firm specialize in?
Megan Bachmann Interiors: We specialize in residential interior design and aim to create thoughtful, practical, and beautiful interiors with a quiet elegance.

RM: Who worked on the winning project?
MBI: Megan Bachmann Interiors (interior designer) and Delbarr Moradi (photographer and homeowner). We worked collaboratively together to style and shoot the space. We worked for about a year on this house project, with the clients putting their heart and soul into the project and all the decision-making. It was a unique experience to have your client and homeowner be the photographer, and we had way too much fun bringing the project to a close with a big photo shoot.

RM: What were your practical goals for the project?
MBI: The clients had a strong sense for what look they wanted in the master bathroom, and we helped them to achieve it. The result is modern, inviting, and very California. We wanted to create a spacious and open bathroom that didn’t feel cold. The clients wanted to feel like they were in wine country.

RM: What solutions did you find to your design problems?
MBI: Freestanding tubs look so beautiful, but there is often the problem of missing storage. The little wooden stool is the perfect spot to set down your towel or soap while you bathe.

RM: What are your favorite features of the project?
MBI: Our favorite features of this project are the oversize custom oak vanity and the gorgeous vintage rug that brings in a little bit of color and completes the room. Each layer of texture, from the limestone floors to the waffle towels, brings a little more life to the space. Greenery was also really important to add some texture. We love using clippings from my garden or greenery from the florist to hang in the bathroom on a hook. And since that foliage dries right there, the look lasts a really long time.

RM: What advice do you have for someone else undertaking a similar project?
MBI: Make sure to have your natural stone, such as the limestone on these floors, sealed by a professional!

RM: What was your biggest splurge?
MBI: The Dornbracht faucets were a bit of a splurge, but totally worth it. They are the jewelry in the space.

RM: What is your dream project, or who is your dream client?
MBI: Our absolute dream project is to design a modern beach residence on the west coast of California or Hawaii. We’re officially putting it out into the world.

RM: What is your favorite local shop?
MBI: I don’t think this is so much of a secret, but I love Muji for styling accessories for bathrooms—the clear toothbrushes, the black swabs, all the little practical organizing items. It’s such a dream in that store, I could spend hours there—and sometimes do.
