O Christmas tree.
O Christmas tree.
How lovely are your branches.
I love a good branch, but when it comes to the tree?
The icing on the top is the topper.
In random news? There are so many times I forget about the top of the tree. I get so caught up in the ornaments and the lights and the ribbon and the snowflakes and the garland and the bows that I forget about the tippy top of the branches.
The default of course is the star.
And I’m here for it.
But there are so many other ways to get a little creative with the top of the tree. And I mean creative. I can’t wait to show you the BEST ideas I’ve used myself and a few new ideas I found. Just as an example—did you know there’s a tree topper that projects stars onto the ceiling?
Yep.
It shines on the top of the tree and then it shines stars right onto the ceiling.
Isn’t that amazing?
And we are just getting started.
So today, on Day 11 of “12 Days of Getting Ready for Christmas” I’m talking about 7 creative, unique and outside-the-box ideas for Christmas tree toppers.

// eucalyptus stems //
1. Eucalyptus tree topper
Have you ever thought about adding stems to the top of the tree?
It kind of makes sense.
Stems are tall and they fill out the top of the tree and add extra height.
And plus? They look so fancy.
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- add a bow to the top of the tree
- tuck eucalyptus in and around the bow
- fluff the eucalyptus in all directions until you round out the tree topper
- you can use this tree topper base to stabilize it
You can see eucalyptus here.

2. Flowers and ribbon
Here’s another version of number one.
Except instead of eucalyptus—this tree topper in the dining room uses ribbon and flowers and branches.
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- add a velvet bow to the top of the tree
- wire branches and flowers together to form an arrangement
- tuck flower arrangement in and around the bow
- fluff the branches in all directions until you round out the tree topper
- you can use this tree topper base to stabilize it

Here’s another version that’s more neutral with a little bit of farmhouse.
The concept is the same, except you use single stem branches and gold ribbon.
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- add a gold bow to the top of the tree (it always starts with the bow)
- wire branches and stems together to form an arrangement
- tuck the arrangement in and around the bow
- fluff the branches in all directions until you round out the tree topper
- you can use this tree topper base to stabilize it

3. Map star
This is such a fun DIY for the top of the tree.
I’ve shared it before—it has its own story. Those are my father’s maps that my sister made a star from. She folded the maps using origami.
Every year I pull it out and every year I decorate with it and every year I celebrate my dad.
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- the one my sister made was super intricate but I found a simpler 8 point star pattern instead here
- you could use a map of somewhere special for the paper
- you could also add ribbons to the star for even more of a decorating impact
- you can use this tree topper base to stabilize it

4. Light up grapevine star
This is my newest find and I love it.
It looks amazing twinkling on top of the tree and it’s the perfect size for a tree topper.
It’s a grapevine star that lights up and it’s perfect for a neutral or farmhouse tree.
You can see it here.

5. Chalkboard star
Here’s a clever idea if you are up for something a little tree top random.
What about a chalkboard?
Yep.
A chalkboard on top of the tree with a chalk star.
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- find a small chalkboard (here’s a similar one that even comes with a stand for after Christmas)
- draw a star onto the chalkboard
- wire it onto the top of the tree
- you can use this tree topper base to stabilize it

6. Ribbon tree topper
Now for the easiest tree topper award.
This bow is NEXT LEVEL. I ordered it last year in blue and have it on top of the office tree (you can see it on the tour I’m sharing next week).
And now I have it in red for the dining room tree.
It also comes in polka dot ribbon and nutcracker ribbon and snowflake ribbon.
And it’s UNDER $20.00.
You can see it here.

7. Hanging tree topper
I saved my favorite idea for last.
Instead of hanging the star on the tree? What if you hung the star OVER the tree?
Genius, right?
If you want to create a tree topper like this:
- start with a snowflake or a star
- attach a ribbon to the top
- hang from the ceiling over the tree

And don’t forget this tree topper that projects stars onto the ceiling.
Sigh.
My heart is so happy.
I love decorating for Christmas and Christmas trees are at the top of my decorating list.
Literally.
PS Happy Veteran’s Day to all the amazing veterans (especially the ones with the twinkling eyes). We owe you so much and we are SO GRATEFUL to you for your service and willingness to sacrifice so much for your country.
