DECORATING How To Add A Fairy Door To a Tree

Have you ever wondered how to add a fairy door to a tree? Here’s how I decorated the tree in my backyard with a tiny door.

A dining room with dark blue walls features a white rectangular table and matching white chairs. A chandelier hangs above the table, which is decorated with a white vase holding flowers. Patterned curtains frame the window, and framed artwork adorns the walls.

Remember earlier in the week when I showed you this dining room?

And this new blue and white runner?

It showed up in a giant box with a few other things I’d ordered from Amazon.

Like this amazing new top coat for nails that dries in minutes.

And these tanning wipes that I’ve been using for touch-ups on the daily.

But there was something else in the box.

Something that surprised me.

Why?

Because I didn’t order it.

Nope.

It just showed up amongst the other things in the box. At first, I was dismissive. It was like nothing that I’d ever seen before and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I contacted Amazon and they told me I could donate it or discard it or keep it. So I thought and thought and thought and then?

Here’s what I got and what I did with it.

A small, arched, red wooden door with black edges and gold hinges, featuring a brass latch lock and a decorative heart-shaped cutout at the center. The door is slightly ajar and set against a plain white background.

This is what showed up.

This is what I never ordered (or actually ever heard of before).

This tiny door that opens. It measures about 6″ tall and it’s designed to be an outlet cover.

You can open the door on tiny hinges and it’s open in back to show the outlet and then you close it back when not in use. It comes with these sticky pieces on the back so you can just stick the door on the wall.

After I called Amazon to let them know they had sent it to me by accident, I was just going to donate it.

And then?

Someone on Instagram gave me the best idea.

What if I made it into a fairy door?

(total aside: if you ever need a fairy door like this, you can see this one here.)

A yellow-handled screwdriver is tightening a golden hinge onto a small dark green and red wooden door or panel. Three small screws are scattered on the white surface next to the door.

I started by taking off the hinges and the latch.

It was so easy.

I just used a smaller screwdriver and took off all the pieces.

A small rectangular shelf with an arched top being painted. White paint is being applied to the dark green surface using a foam brush, partially covering the lower edges and top sections.

Then I painted it the colors of my house.

I used a foam brush and basic acrylic paint.

I think I should have probably primed it first, but I was so excited that I just forged on.

A close-up photograph of a hinge being attached to a freshly painted wooden frame. The wood is coated in white paint, and the hinge appears to be brass. The background surface is covered with protective material with white paint splatters.

After everything dried, the hinges were attached back on.

And then?

I took the finished door outside….

A small, black fairy door with white trim is set against a tree trunk. It has a greenery wreath and a "Welcome" mat. Red miniature garden tools and red chairs with a picnic basket on one are arranged nearby, surrounded by green moss and plants.

….and created this.

A fairy door to the base of the tree in the backyard.

CAN YOU EVEN?

If you’ve met me for more than five minutes, you know that I’ve been obsessed with miniatures my whole life—from my first Barbie house on a bookshelf to this fairy tree house.

A small outdoor scene with two red metal chairs around a matching round table. On the table is a wooden tray with three baguettes on a red and white checkered cloth. In the background, there are green plants and a pair of black boots near a tree trunk.

How To Add A Fairy Door To a Tree

I added this tiny red chair and table set.

There’s a basket full of baguettes with a tiny red checkered table cloth.

So the fairies can have coffee in the morning.

A small black door with a decorative cross-shaped window features a green wreath adorned with a striped ribbon. The door has a brass hinge and latch, adding a charming touch to the rustic scene.

I made this tiny wreath with a miniature bow for the front door.

A small set of red gardening tools, including a hoe, rake, and shovel, lean against the trunk of a tree next to a small white-paneled door with brass hinges. The scene includes decorative green moss and foliage at the base.

Next to the door is this tiny set of garden tools.

There’s a rake and a shovel and a hoe.

Even fairies need to do yard work every now and then.

A whimsical scene features a tiny black door with a wreath and welcome mat set into the base of a large tree. In front of the door, there are three small red chairs around a table with a checkered cloth. Miniature gardening tools are also placed nearby.

There are tiny boots and a tiny door mat and everything is tucked away into the roots of this giant oak tree in the backyard.

And when I was planning this tiny fairy door and thinking about all the littles that would discover this in the backyard and how I’d decorate it for Christmas…

….I discovered something amazing.

McKinney, the town that I live in….

…..has an ENTIRE tiny door village.

There’s an art installation all over our downtown with over 80 tiny doors.

I went downtown yesterday and went on a tiny door treasure hunt and discovered all of these doors (there were tons more but I didn’t have the space to share them all here).

Here are some of the doors I photographed.

A whimsical miniature fairy door set against a gray wall. The door, decorated with vines and a "Welcome" sign, is accompanied by two small windows on either side and a tiny ladder leading up to the door, with a pink birdhouse hanging above.

A small decorative wooden house with a triangular roof, featuring a door with the word "LOVE" and a bird design. The house has rustic details and is set against a brick wall. Wooden discs and a tiny ladder are placed next to it, adding a whimsical touch.

A storefront window with an Instagram handle (@last_art...) written on it. Above the window is a decorative wooden ladder with colorful steps, leading to a small wooden house placed on a shelf. The building across the street is reflected in the window.

A small wooden door carved into the corner of a white and red brick wall. Inside, a miniature scene is visible, featuring a tiny bar setup with stools and a counter. Next to the door, there's a tiny barrel, a bottle, and a sign that reads "Milly's Tap.

A tiny blue door with a screen, blue window, and a small red rocking chair are set against a brick wall. The scene includes a miniature welcome mat, broom, and a basket, giving the appearance of a whimsical, miniature home.

A colorful, hand-painted wooden mushroom house decoration is placed against a brick wall. The house features a pink door, small windows, and a purple roof with yellow spots. Above it, the brick wall is painted with blue and white wave-like patterns.

A small whimsical door set into a white brick wall, surrounded by colorful tiles in blue, green, and turquoise hues. The door is red with an interesting wavy design. Miniature decorative items, including a couple of tiny tiles, are placed on each side of the door.

A miniature model of a storefront is attached to a blue brick wall. The model has a white door and windows, a black awning, and a sign that reads "Reep's Honey". There are small decorations around the door, including pictures and objects.

A small, colorful diorama of a miniature bicycle shop named "Cadence Cyclery" is set against a brick wall. It features a variety of painted elements, including a Texas flag, flowers, and gears. In front, there is a tiny blue bike with a rack, and an open door with a sign that reads "COFFEE.

And these are just some of the doors on the outside of the buildings downtown.

There were so many more doors and you can see the rest of them here.

This is the page with all the information on the local art exhibit.

And in the land of the tiny doors? McKinney now has another tiny door.

Isn’t it amazing?

Something that showed up unexpectedly. Something that I never ordered or knew about or even knew I needed. Something that I would have never even imagined existed.

Out of a random lemon house—we made lemonade.

And now?

It’s one of my favorite things.

PS You can see the fairy door I accidentally got here.

PPS And now your turn? I’d LOVE to know if you’ve ever gotten something you didn’t order from Amazon.

I’d love to hear about your “fairy door.”

Just in case in you need a little “fairy inspiration”? I put together some of my fairy accessories.

You can see them over on my Amazon shop here.
