Have you ever wondered how to add a fairy door to a tree? Here’s how I decorated the tree in my backyard with a tiny door.

Remember earlier in the week when I showed you this dining room?
And this new blue and white runner?
It showed up in a giant box with a few other things I’d ordered from Amazon.
Like this amazing new top coat for nails that dries in minutes.
And these tanning wipes that I’ve been using for touch-ups on the daily.
But there was something else in the box.
Something that surprised me.
Why?
Because I didn’t order it.
Nope.
It just showed up amongst the other things in the box. At first, I was dismissive. It was like nothing that I’d ever seen before and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I contacted Amazon and they told me I could donate it or discard it or keep it. So I thought and thought and thought and then?
Here’s what I got and what I did with it.

This is what showed up.
This is what I never ordered (or actually ever heard of before).
This tiny door that opens. It measures about 6″ tall and it’s designed to be an outlet cover.
You can open the door on tiny hinges and it’s open in back to show the outlet and then you close it back when not in use. It comes with these sticky pieces on the back so you can just stick the door on the wall.
After I called Amazon to let them know they had sent it to me by accident, I was just going to donate it.
And then?
Someone on Instagram gave me the best idea.
What if I made it into a fairy door?
(total aside: if you ever need a fairy door like this, you can see this one here.)

I started by taking off the hinges and the latch.
It was so easy.
I just used a smaller screwdriver and took off all the pieces.

Then I painted it the colors of my house.
I used a foam brush and basic acrylic paint.
I think I should have probably primed it first, but I was so excited that I just forged on.

After everything dried, the hinges were attached back on.
And then?
I took the finished door outside….

….and created this.
A fairy door to the base of the tree in the backyard.
CAN YOU EVEN?
If you’ve met me for more than five minutes, you know that I’ve been obsessed with miniatures my whole life—from my first Barbie house on a bookshelf to this fairy tree house.

How To Add A Fairy Door To a Tree
I added this tiny red chair and table set.
There’s a basket full of baguettes with a tiny red checkered table cloth.
So the fairies can have coffee in the morning.

I made this tiny wreath with a miniature bow for the front door.

Next to the door is this tiny set of garden tools.
There’s a rake and a shovel and a hoe.
Even fairies need to do yard work every now and then.

There are tiny boots and a tiny door mat and everything is tucked away into the roots of this giant oak tree in the backyard.
And when I was planning this tiny fairy door and thinking about all the littles that would discover this in the backyard and how I’d decorate it for Christmas…
….I discovered something amazing.
McKinney, the town that I live in….
…..has an ENTIRE tiny door village.
There’s an art installation all over our downtown with over 80 tiny doors.
I went downtown yesterday and went on a tiny door treasure hunt and discovered all of these doors (there were tons more but I didn’t have the space to share them all here).
Here are some of the doors I photographed.

And these are just some of the doors on the outside of the buildings downtown.
There were so many more doors and you can see the rest of them here.
This is the page with all the information on the local art exhibit.

And in the land of the tiny doors? McKinney now has another tiny door.
Isn’t it amazing?
Something that showed up unexpectedly. Something that I never ordered or knew about or even knew I needed. Something that I would have never even imagined existed.
Out of a random lemon house—we made lemonade.
And now?
It’s one of my favorite things.
PS You can see the fairy door I accidentally got here.
PPS And now your turn? I’d LOVE to know if you’ve ever gotten something you didn’t order from Amazon.
I’d love to hear about your “fairy door.”
Just in case in you need a little “fairy inspiration”? I put together some of my fairy accessories.
You can see them over on my Amazon shop here.
