Craft Room Makeover Before and After Using the 2024 Color of the Year

Ready for a fresh start in your creative space? See how a dated craft room gets a stunning makeover using Sherwin-Williams’ 2024 Color of the Year.

In our house at the top of the stairs through the hallway and behind a 100-year-old door is a room tucked into the corner of the house.

It’s been many things over the years.

A playroom.

A bunk bed room.

A movie room.

A guest bedroom.

Then about two years ago I painted the walls white and turned it into my craft room.

I organized the closet and added storage and added a table and created a display for all my books. And I loved it. And it was useful. And helpful.

But here’s the thing.

When I was creating? When I was cutting and pasting and painting and drawing and stamping? My heart craved a little color.

Sometimes it’s hard to create when your space doesn’t feel creative.

And then?

I saw the Sherwin-Williams 2024 Color of The Year, Upward SW 6239 and I fell in love.

Have you seen the color yet? It’s the prettiest shade of blue that makes me think of blue skies and happy days and contentment and joy. A blue that’s the perfect color to inspire creativity in a craft room.

So to get ready for the busy holiday season ahead, I transformed this space above.

And now?

The room looks like this.

Oh wait.

I got a little ahead of myself.

Let me show you a little bit more of the space and a mini tour of the room before so you can understand my thinking and my design plan.

The room has windows on two walls that overlook the front and side of the house.

There’s a closet with doors that need to be replaced and an awkward built-in that needs a creative solution. The room has a ceiling fan that’s staying (I’m looking at you Texas summer) and original wood floors and two doors that lead to the hallway and upstairs living room.

Here’s what I’m thinking.

I’m going to start with painting the walls.

All four walls will be painted with Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex paint in Upward SW 6239 and the trim will be painted with Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel in Snowbound SW 7004.

I’m also going to paint the closet doors with the freshest green paint called Honeydew SW 6248 and introduce green as well with the curtains and rug.

I also have a creative solution for the closets that turned out AMAZING. Wait until you see them.

Here’s a look at this beautiful blue paint color.

Seriously.

Just looking at it makes me so happy and contented.

This is the color that I’m using to paint the walls (also as a side note—if you are looking for a really good brush for your next paint project—I love Purdy® brushes and I’ve been using them for years).

They make painting so much easier—especially when you have an angled tip.

One last paint tip.

I love the Emerald® paint line from Sherwin-Williams. The coverage is amazing—some rooms I’ve painted with just one coat–and the paint goes on so smoothly.

For this project I used Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex in a Satin finish for the walls and Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel for the closet doors.

After everything was painted I added a new rug and new curtains with new curtain rods (I’m keeping the shades at the windows).

And of course.

But wait.

You haven’t even seen the best part yet.

Because just around the corner where those old closet doors used to be?

We installed these beautiful new closet doors with new molding and the prettiest brass handles.

Don’t they look custom and built-in?

I’m going to do an entire tutorial on how we made these later, but it’s such an easy DIY. These closet doors are actually just hollow core doors that we’ve fancied up to look like they rolled in from the high-end store.

And remember that opening that was a little awkward because it’s so narrow?

We framed it in and added doors that matched to the front of it.

Then, I found tables that fold out and added them to the space, so I have tons of extra surface space stored right behind these doors.

Here’s what it looks like behind the door now.

See the fold-out tables on the bottom and the storage on the top?

You’d never know all that was there when the door is closed.

The rest of the room kind of fell into place.

I found these vintage chairs at a yard sale and recovered them.

We touched up the table and added green and white curtains to the space.

I hung a vintage chair on a hook on the wall for extra seating, added a few decorating accessories and baskets to the space along with some blue and white striped ticking pillows to the chairs and I’m planning on converting the giant vintage fabric holder on the wall that’s currently filled with books to a gift wrap station for the holidays.

Because a craft room painted in the prettiest blue—Upward SW 6239-–is fun.

But a craft room painted in the prettiest blue—Upward SW 6239—that doubles as a gift wrap room? That’s amazing.
