Messy cords can ruin the look of your stylish living room. Luckily, hiding them is easier than you think—with just a few simple tools

How to hide unsightly cords behind a wall-mounted TV with this easy step-by-step tutorial. Learn how to hide TV cords.

How To Hide TV Cords

You know I am all about my house.

I would marry it in a nanosecond if I wasn’t already in love with a twinkling brown-eyed Angry Lemon.

But even houses that you adore have challenges.

Every time I share this room at the top of the stairs (remember it from the 10 books you need on your reading list post) I get so many questions asking me what the other side of the room looks like.

Y’all.

I couldn’t share it.

I just couldn’t.

I only showed you the cute side because the other side? Well. Umm. Well. It looked like this.

To make the room even cozier, we put a television on the wall and then this mess ensued. The Apple TV just sat there because it didn’t have a home and then there were all those TV wires. I ignored it all and just kept reading books.

All that coziness on the other side of the room and this side was nothing but a hot wire mess.

No worries now.

I fixed it.

I found the perfect solution to hide the television wires AND the Apple TV.

Here’s how to hide TV cords (and almost make them disappear).

How To Hide TV Cords

1. What else is there besides cords?

There were two challenges that we had to address.

We have Apple TV for all our televisions and WE LOVE IT.

We cut the cable several years ago (that’s an entirely different discussion) and we’ve never looked back. If you can’t afford a smart TV? Having an Apple TV is almost the next best thing.

The only challenge of having an Apple TV is that you have to have a place to put it.

And then?

2. How many wires are there?

And then there were the wires.

Yep.

Here are all the wires that we had to deal with:

  • There’s a wire coming out of the television to the plug
  • And a wire coming out of the Apple TV to the plug
  • And another wire connecting the Apple TV to the television

3. Find a solution for your streaming service

First, I found this solution for the Apple TV.

I bought this off Amazon and you can screw it into the wall or just peel off the backing and attach it to the wall that way.

I wanted to just stick it to the wall and someone else who lives at the house and is always extra concerned about doing everything so that it lasts until the next century rolls around wanted to screw it into the wall.

Sigh.

It is now firmly attached to the wall.

5. Attach the bracket to the wall

Here’s what the bracket looks like attached to the wall.

And here’s how the Apple TV looks installed.

(total aside: If you have Roku or other devices—they have similar brackets to this on Amazon, too.)

You can place it anywhere, but we added it right below the back of the swing arm for the television. It’s relatively flat, so it hides behind the television when it’s pushed back flat against the wall.

6. How to hide TV cords

Then we used a zip tie to corral the wire from the Apple TV to the television.

That handled one of the wires and got the Apple TV out of the way.

But what about the other wires?

7. How to hide the rest of the TV wires

I found another solution.

(total aside: I always have lipstick and fake tanner on when I’m doing home improvement projects.)

It’s this long tube that holds the wires.

I also found a paintable option that I have linked here.

It comes in tons of different sizes and heights. I bought the 48″ larger tube because I knew I needed to hold two wires. There are videos with the product that show how to cut it if you need it shorter. You can always buy it slightly longer and then cut to fit.

Just an aside. I was asked questions about hiding cords when I shared the DIY baseboard post last week and one of the solutions we use along baseboards are these medium tubes. You can see the medium tubes here and when you install them they blend in with the baseboards and look like quarter round when you install them.

Here’s the back of the tube.

It has a sticky piece that you pull off and then you just attach it to the wall where you want to hide the wires.

Note: make sure you know exactly where you want it to go because it is STICKY and once you attach it—it’s really hard to reposition.

Here’s how the tube opens.

You just add the wires inside the tube and snap it closed.

(total aside: Don’t you love how my nail polish coordinates with the project? Totally unintentional and amazing all at the same time.)

Here’s what the cord-hiding tube looks like on the wall.

I also found a paintable option that I have linked here.

This is such a great solution and would work if you don’t have white walls.

And now?

In five minutes the space went from this.

To THIS.

Isn’t it SO MUCH CUTER?

We could have drilled holes in the wall to make it even cleaner, but I’m always worried I’m going to change the location of the television and then I’m left with giant holes in this original ship lap that I can’t ever repair.

These cord-hiders are such an EASY and simple option. They keep the cords neat and tidy and they just disappear against the wall cover. I also read that the cord covers are paintable, so you could also paint it to match the color of your wall which would blend in with a wall that wasn’t white.

The room is ready for primetime and everything is neat and tidy and organized. You wouldn’t even know that there were cords there. And next time I photograph this space?

This side will be front and center.

WE GOT THIS.
