DIYs The Vintage Find I Never Even Knew I Needed

There I was minding my own business on a beach vacation.

Trying to decide if I should go down to the beach or read a book and just look at the ocean.

And then?

In the middle of all that sunshine?

The birds started chirping and the clouds shimmered and sand fleas danced and the oceans sang the halleluiah chorus.

Because I’m bringing home something so amazing, so wonderful, so special that it seemed as if it was made for me.

(total aside: aren’t those the best kind of finds).

Something that I never knew I was even looking for.

Until.

Until I saw this.

This wonderful, incredible amazing cabinet.

My aunt was rearranging some things in her house and this cabinet didn’t really have a home.

What?

I have a home.

I’m fun.

I could adopt it and bring it home to Texas.

I mean—look at those tiny swinging brass handles.

And the carved vine pattern on the drawers and the door on the front.

And wait until you see the top.

It’s MARBLE.

With the prettiest countertop and mini backsplash.

The cabinet is a little wonky and needs to be shored up on the sides and I need to clean the wood and clean the marble top.

But those are minor details when faced with a thing of great beauty.

And all that imperfection? It made me love it more. I saw the lines. I saw the details. I knew what it could become and what it would look like when it was all put together with its little mini trip to the spa.

But I had an even bigger challenge in front of me than fixing up the cabinet.

You see, space is kind of limited when you are driving across the country.

There are suitcases and boxes and blankets and pillows and tubs and of course, my mother needs a seat in the car.

I had to convince my husband that the cabinet needed to come with us and that it was possible to drive it across 8 states and 2 turnpikes and the Mississippi River.

I took him over to my aunt’s house so he could meet the cabinet–so he and the piece of furniture I fell in love with could get acquainted.

When I saw it, I ran to it and greeted it with open arms.

Hello beautiful.

I showed it to my husband and pointed at it and danced with excitement.

“Look at this. Can you even believe it? Isn’t it beautiful?” I said in a rush.

He calmly surveyed the cabinet and smiled.

No words were necessary.

This was not his first furniture-driving rodeo.

After the cabinet was loaded into the car and we pulled away from my aunt’s house, I let out a sigh of satisfaction and thought to myself how amazing it was going to look in the entryway at home.

My husband smiled at me across the car. “I’m so happy you love it,” he said. “It is the perfect cabinet for the house.”

I stared at him in amazement.

How had he managed to sum up a vintage find that we never knew we needed, but that was officially going to take the entryway to the next level—in eight simple words?

*sigh*

I’m so happy I was lucky enough to marry him.

I’m so happy his eyes still twinkle when I tell him I found a piece of furniture.

And I’m the happiest that when I told him the cabinet needed to cross the Mississippi River…..

….he knew which direction we were going all along.
