Looking for ideas to update a bedroom? Decorating doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are 9 easy ideas to makeover your spaces.

I just updated our bedroom for summer.
Some of the colors and materials were so heavy. I wanted light and bright and cool—especially when it’s 102 degrees outside.
Just in case you were wondering?
I love it.
I love it almost as much as I love red lipstick and reading books during summer vacation.
And that is a LOT of LOVE.
There are so many projects and ideas and creative ways that I updated this bedroom on a dime.
And in amazing news? The ideas are not that hard. Some might take a little bit (I’m looking at you painted plywood floors) and some might take five minutes. Rather than splurging on a complete bedroom makeover, there are a few easy ways to give your space a fresh new look.
All of these ideas are projects that anyone can do on a budget along with all of the budget sources for the room.
If you want to make a little change to your decor?
Here are 9 easy ideas to update a bedroom.

9 Easy Ideas To Update a Bedroom
1. Painted plywood floor
If you are not a gallionaire I have the flooring project for YOU.
Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to transform a room and we started this room makeover with the floor.
The rest of the floors in our home are all solid wood, but when we pulled up the carpeting in this room, there was plywood underneath.
No worries.
Plywood is no match for my imagination. So we primed and painted it with this checkerboard pattern. We painted it several years ago and it has held up amazingly well. It looks as pretty as the day we painted it. The key is to seal it with several layers of top coat.
You can see the entire DIY here.

2. Mix and match textures
Another easy way to add interest to your bedroom is to mix and match different textures and patterns. Try combining different materials such as wood, metal, and fabric in unexpected ways.
I’m telling you.
If you want to update your bedroom with a pulled-together look, texture, and pattern are the key.
See the raised texture on those quatrefoil euro shams combined with the quilted blanket on the bed. There’s texture with the rug and baskets and the wood side tables and linen curtains.
And I just found this AMAZING new quilt from the My Texas House line that is reversible so you can get two looks for one space.
You can see the quilt set here (it’s reversible and it comes with two shams).
A little about the bedding basics that are my tried and true:
- Euro sham down inserts
- hotel bed pillows
- mattress topper

3. Get organized
One of the quickest ways to make your bedroom feel bigger and brighter is to declutter and get organized. Donate or sell items you no longer need, and find creative storage solutions for the things you do need. An organized room will always look more inviting than one that’s crammed full of stuff.
I try to keep most of my surfaces free with just one or two things.
For extra storage space, I added these super inexpensive closet units on the wall from IKEA.
Here’s a glimpse inside to see how I organized everything with these simple organizing tips for closets.
I organized the shelves inside the cabinets with these amazing sweater/top organizers. They are kind of game-changers. I used to hang up my sweaters, but they get so stretched out, so I was looking for a solution to add the sweaters to the shelves in an organized way. I use this sweater folder to fold the sweaters and then I organize them according to color. I can see them all at a glance now and it made so much more space in the closet for other hanging clothes.
You can see the organizers here.

4. DIY wood bead mirror
Every room needs a mirror.
We’ve already discussed the importance of this before and 7 ways to decorate with mirrors. I love those giant oversized mirrors, but they are so expensive.
This is such an easy way to have your mirror and DIY it too.

5. Make-up storage
Do you know those vintage sugar molds?
I found a new use for mine.
Make-up storage.
It holds all my brushes and make-up applicators.
I got mine at a local antique store, but you can find some super similar sugar molds on etsy here.

6. Let in the light
Brighten up your space by opening up the curtains or blinds during the day, and adding some lamps for nighttime. Changing up the shade of your light can make even the smallest room feel warm and inviting. I like to have three points of light in every room.
I have these lamps on remote timers with my lightbulb sockets.
I can turn them on with a click of a button.

7. Add a cozy throw (or quilt)
When it comes to bedroom decor, less is often more. A few carefully chosen accessories like this cozy throw can make all the difference without making your space feel cluttered or overdone.
Stick to a few favorite colors or themes, and choose pieces that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy.
This tassel throw has been my best friend for years. It looks so high end and those tassels are next level.
You can see the tassel throw here.

8. Easy curtain update
I ordered these curtains for the bedroom. They are such a good deal and I actually ordered them for the twins’ rooms too.
The challenge with these curtains? They come with grommets that are silver. And I’m all about gold right now. It was such an easy fix.
I just folded over the top and clipped on the rings.

9. Add a basket
Sigh.
There’s nothing I love more than a basket.
I use them to store extra blankets. I use them to store extra linens. I use them for trashcans and hampers and storage for extra beauty supplies and so much more.
If you need to add something to your space?
Add a basket (especially if it looks like a house).
I bought this house basket several years ago from H & M. It’s sold out now—but I did find this house basket that’s also a purse. You could take off the straps and use it to decorate, too.
You can see the house basket here.
And I also found these adorable scalloped baskets here.
Here are all the sources for the room
