Looking for cleaning tips for the home? Here are 11 places you are probably forgetting to clean in the living room.

Does anyone else watch cleaning videos on Instagram?
I’m kind of obsessed.
Am I the only one who can’t look away when someone is deep cleaning a room? Taking everything off the counters or unloading everything from a shelf or taking all the glasses out of a kitchen cupboard or unzipping pillow covers to put them in the wash.
It’s so fascinating to me.
Mostly because my idea of cleaning a room is a little vacuuming and dusting.
And that’s on a good day.
Last week I was so inspired by all that cleaning that I treated myself to a new vacuum.
It’s kind of fancy.
It arrived and I unpackaged it and put it together and it was so easy to use and I was so inspired that almost before I knew it….
….something amazing happened.
I PRETENDED I WAS ON ONE OF THOSE CLEANING VIDEOS.
I know, right?
I’m as surprised as you are.
I left no cleaning stone unturned. t was amazing and wonderful and cathartic and fulfilling and SO SATISFYING. I really had no idea how many things I been overlooking when I cleaned the living room.
So today I wanted to share.
Here are 11 places you are probably forgetting to clean in the living room.
11 Places You Are Probably Forgetting To Clean In the Living Room

1. Under the seat cushions
Okay. Truthfully, most of you probably clean under the seat cushions on the regular so this will come as no surprise.
But here’s the thing.
It wasn’t just the sear cushions, mine were pretty clean when I lifted the cushion off.
I used the attachment on the vacuum that I got (you can see it here) and stuck it way down on the sides of the couch and that’s where I found ALL KINDS of stuff I never even knew. I have never ever ever been able to vacuum that far down before and it was a treasure trove of crumbs.
So next time you lift off the cushion, don’t just stop at the top.

2. The actual seat cushions
I don’t think I’ve EVER vacuumed the top of the cushions before.
Mostly I just brush the crumbs off of them (and flip them over sometimes if there’s a stain I can’t get out).
But you could shorten the vacuum and use the suction end on the top of the cushions. It was AMAZING. The vacuum had so much suction that it pulled out dirt out of the cushion that I didn’t even know was there.
You could see the dirt swirling around in the canister and the cushions looked about 2 years newer.

3. Curtains
The curtains in my living room have never been vacuumed.
Ever.
I just never thought about it.
But the vacuum had this brush attachment and it suctioned and brushed all at the same time. I used it with the extension and was able to clean from the top of the curtain to the bottom and I’m five feet tall.
And the brush on the end of the vacuum—you can flip the switch and a suction end pulls out, too.
It’s kind of next level.

4. Top and bottom of baseboards
We have tall baseboards in the living room.
There are actually three pieces of molding all combined together which gives dust so many places to hide.
I usually sweep the bottom of the molding when I vacuum the room, but I forget about the top and middle of the baseboards.
The brush attachment works like gold here, too, because it gets in all the crevices and layers of the molding.

5. Windows and side lights
I have two side lights on either side of the front door.
Occasionally I wipe them down with a microfiber cloth (you’ve heard me sing the praises of a good microfiber cloth before).
The microfiber cloth works well on the windows, but because it’s wet, sometimes it leaves behind a little residue on the window.
So I came up with the idea of using the vacuum with the brush (you could also use just the suction extension, too).
The dust literally leapt off the windows.

6. Floor vents
When I was vacuuming the floor, I noticed there was a little dust on the floor vents (and then I thought I should order some fancy new floor vents that were way cuter).
But for now?
I have sparkling clean floor vents.
I used the brush attachment and the edges of the brush got between the vents.

7. Pillows
In super random news, I decided to try and vacuum the pillows.
(total aside: sometimes I pretend I’m in my own reality cleaning show.)
I have never, ever, ever vacuumed a pillow before and the pillows looked so much fresher when I finished. The embroidered pattern popped off the pillow a little more and looked 2 years younger, too.
I took off the extension to vacuum the pillows.
8. Top of pictures
I totally forgot to get a picture of this one.
But that brush attachment? It worked so much better than the duster I usually use.
The combination of the brush and the suction were perfect for getting that layer the dust off the top of pictures.

9. Drawers
When I put all the games away from the giant family game day we just finished (more on that later), I noticed that there was dust in the drawers.
No worries.
I just used the vacuum with the short attachment and vacuumed up the dust from the edges of the drawer.

10. Chairs and benches
I have chairs in the living room that don’t have removable backs.
Again, I usually just brush them down after a party.
But I was so inspired that I used the suction attachment and vacuumed out from the very center of the chair.
I know I said this before, but the satisfaction I got from the random dust and dirt clinking around in the vacuum cleaner made me SO HAPPY.
My chairs looked two years younger, too.

11. Under the couch
I usually move the couches aside and vacuum under them (or not if I’m on a lazy cleaning day).
But the extension made it so easy.
I just ran the vacuum wand under the couch and saved myself all that couch moving.

And here’s the vacuum I treated myself to. I splurged a little and I am the happiest person ever that I did. It works like a dream.
It’s a Dyson.
The Dyson V8 Origin+ Cordless Vacuum to be exact.
I’ve never had a Dyson anything before, but now I understand what all the talk about Dyson is.
I truly, truly, truly love it because:
- It doesn’t have a cord
- I just plug it in when I’m not using it to charge it, but I cleaned for a long time and it still had TONS of power
- It has that amazing extension for cleaning things like curtains
- I could also use it as a hand-held vacuumed, too
- It has a brush tip that you flip and a suction end comes out
- You just empty all the dirt from the bin–no bags
- It just feels fancy (that’s KariAnne speak for it’s amazing)
You can see it here.
I also found one that’s a little fancier but has TONS more attachments for more cleaning ideas.
You can see it here.
So what did you think?
Are these all things you clean on the regular?
Did I miss anything?
If so, please let me know.
I’m looking for more cleaning ideas for my cleaning reality show.
