Looking for easy closet organizing tips? Here are some of my favorite ideas for keeping the closet organized.

Just in case you wonder if I live an exciting life?
You would be right.
I spent this weekend organizing my closets.
See what I mean?
Living on the edge.
I couldn’t help it. I was trying to find a lightweight sweater. I knew which sweater I was looking for, I’d worn it tons of times. But when I opened up the door to get it out? All these jumbled sweaters got in the way. Nothing gets in the way of finding a sweater than piles and piles of OTHER jumbled sweaters.
I searched through the piles and pulled out the sweaters and some of them ended up on the floor and then there, in the very bottom of the closet I found the exact sweater I was looking for.
But when I turned around?
My bedroom closet shelves and floor were full of jumbled sweaters and I went all Scarlet O’Hara and shook my fist at the sky and told the sweaters they were not going to lick me.
And they didn’t.
Because WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE what my closet looks like now.
12 Easy Closet Organizing Tips You Can Use Today

Look how cute.
AND ORGANIZED.
This morning when I opened those doors you have no idea how happy these little organizers made me.

Will you please humor me and look at this before one more time?
Before’s just make the afters look so much better.
All that progress with photographic evidence.

1. Clip-on hangers for jeans
Here’s the full closet with both sides of the door open.
Just a few quick organizing notes about this closet:
- I LOVE hanging up my jeans on those hangers that have clips
- Sometimes if I don’t wear them for a while, the jeans can get that crease when you take them out to wear them
- But if you hang them on hangers like these, they always look super crisp
2. Boot hangers
I love, love, LOVE this easy (and affordable) way to keep your boots organized.
- And look at that boot organizer (it’s on sale for under $9 today and you can see it here)
- It’s the easiest way to organize boots, it has long pockets that you can store boots on either side of the hanging organizer and free up your closet floor space
3. Keep your boots’ shape
Also—if you want to keep your boots in shape?
You know, you don’t want them to glump over and look soggy.
I love these inserts are perfect for keeping them uncrinkled (not even sure if that is a word).

4. These sweater organizers
But my sweater organizers are the real star of the SHOW.
Even posting this picture made my heart leap.
Look at that color coordination, too.
They come in a set of six (or four or two if you don’t have that many sweaters).
The set of six has two organizers with six compartments and four organizers with four compartments (for bulkier sweaters).
You can see them here.

5. Bulkier sweater organizers
And if you have bulkier sweaters?
These have been my go-to sweater organizers for years.
They are sturdy felt and work well with larger sweaters (like this Nantucket sweater I just got for the Cape this summer).

6. Turn your hangers
I know this is SO CAPTAIN OBVIOUS and this tip actually came from one of you.
After you wear something?
Turn the hanger around like you are a closet game show contestant.
The goal? To have all your hangers turned around by the end of the year. If you didn’t wear it that year, it’s probably a good idea to think about un-closeting it.
7. Add a dresser to your closet
Twins, I’m looking at you.
Sometimes your closet is big and your room is small.
What if you added your dresser inside the closet? Or at the very least, what if you added a little dresser? We kind of did this at the Cape house and it helps with organizing all those “unmentionables” as my grandmother used to say.

//taller drawer dividers // shorter drawer dividers //
8. Drawer dividers for the win
If your drawers are too big (just look at these drawers in my closet) and you need to break them up?
Drawer dividers are the answer.
You can see them in my drawers because the drawers are clear (which is a blessing and a curse). They have rubber ends on each side and you just click them into place. I’ve had this set for years and it’s so easy to keep everything in its place with these.
These are the taller drawer dividers that I have.
And these are the smaller drawer dividers that I have.

9. These shoe storage containers
Did you see the plastic boxes in the top right corner of the closet?
I love these shoe storage containers for scarves and socks and miscellaneous stuff.
They have doors that open and there’s so much affordable storage.
You can see them here.
I also found these belt organizers for the closet, too.

// space saving hooks (and they are on sale today for under $9) //
10. Add space-saving hanger hooks for easy closet organizing
Here’s what the dress closet looked like when I started.
It was FULL.
With extra full on top.
I needed more space so I decided to try these.

// space saving hooks (and they are on sale today for under $9) //
They are these little hooks that allow you to double up the clothes hangers.
You just hook one over the edge of the hanger.
Then you hang two hangers together.
This is the EXACT product I wish I had invented and taken to Shark Tank.
Why didn’t I think of these?

11. Use coat hooks to hang belts
There are tons of belt organizers that I’ve used.
But at the end of the day?
The thing that holds up my belts and is the sturdiest?
Coat hooks. They have a top and a bottom hook and help organize my belts by pattern and color.

12. Add a mirror to the back of the door
I wish I had a picture of my mirror on the back of my door.
I always crop it out when I take pictures.
But I have a full-length mirror on the back of the door and this full-length mirror in between the closets.
That way I can see myself in the front (and the back).
Sometimes (just between us) I look SO CUTE in the front? And then when I turn around? YIKES.
I scare even myself. It’s so important to check yourself coming and going.
Here’s a little before and after of my closet in action.
See what I mean?
I live a VERY EXCITING LIFE.
