Here is the step-by-step for how to make mini tassels along with tons of ideas and tips on how to decorate with them.

I’m not sure which emotion to discuss first.

My utter sadness and dismay that my beloved Baylor Bears bit the dust on Saturday.

Sigh.

Or the happiness and elation and overwhelming joy that the idea for these mini tassels hopped out of my brain onto my craft table and turned out even cuter than I thought.

I’ll choose joy.

Every. Single. Time.

So today I want to show you how to make mini tassels.

And in even better news?

How to make mini tassels

This really is SUCH an easy craft because I went first and figured out all the shortcuts. I’m sharing all my tips on how to make these in under 30 minutes.

supplies (I linked everything here in case you don’t have all this stuff in your craft closet):

mini wood candle cups

white acrylic paint

jute twine

hot glue

Step 1: Paint unfinished candle cups white

The entire idea for this project showed up when I saw these candle cups. I bought them at Hobby Lobby, but I couldn’t find the smaller ones online so I linked them on etsy. The candle cups come in different sizes, but to make these mini tassels, you want to get the smaller candle cups in unfinished wood and make sure there’s a hole on both sides.

Use a small paintbrush to paint the candle cups white with white acrylic craft paint.

(shortcut: put the candle cup on the end of a large marker and paint them completely on all sides. Then push off the candle cup, flip over and paint the rim.)

Step 2: Thread the candle cup with jute twine

Cut a piece of jute twine about 8 inches long.

Thread the jute twine through the top of the candle cup.

(shortcut: don’t even try (like I did) to thread it from the inside. It’s waaaay too hard and it gets stuck. Thread it through the top instead.)

Tie a knot in one end and pull it tight against the hole in the top as shown in the bottom picture.

Step 3: Cut twine and tie

Cut 7 pieces of jute twine.

Each piece should be about 6-7 inches long (don’t worry too much about the length because we’ll be trimming it later.

Tie the pieces in the center with another length of the jute twine.

Step 4: Fold twine and glue

Fold the strip of twine in half (right where the knot is) and add a drop of hot glue to the end.

Stuff the folded twine into the larger end of the candle cup.

Let the glue dry for a minute.

Then trim the end of the twine to even out the end of the tassel.

That’s it.

Your mini tassels are ready for their decorating debut.

But what do you do with them?

Me?

I added them to the four corners of a pillow.

I used this large embroidery needle to add the tassels to the corners of the pillow.

Simply thread the jute twine through the large eye of the needle and thread through the corners of the pillow.

Then double knot in place.

Repeat the same steps for each of the other corners.

Here are the finished pillows in the new painted floor bedroom makeover.

I’m SO HAPPY with how they turned out.

You can add these mini tassels to pillow (like I did) or you could:

• add them to the end of a bookmark and hang them over the edge of a book
• tie them around a lamp
• add them to the end of a string of wood beads
• tie them on top of a package
• tie them with jute twine around a stack of books
• make a garland from them
• tie them on the trim of a basket
• loop them over the top of a cloche

There are so many possibilities for mini tassel decorating. I had this set of pillows already at the house, but I found a few options for pillow covers that would work well with this project:
